We also offer technical support services via our bilingual Support Desk. Our support specialists can be contacted by telephone or email to assist learners with any technical issues they may encounter.
The ABCs of Sleep
Three babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) every week in Canada. Also known as Crib Death, SIDS refers to the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age. Such deaths usually occur while the child is sleeping and remain unexplained even after a full investigation. Nobody knows how to prevent SIDS, but the latest research shows that there are things you can do to make your baby safer.
The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) course explores the risk factors associated with SIDS and provides caregivers with information to improve the health and safety of infants and reduce the risk of SIDS.
This course is designed for parents, grandparents, babysitters, day care workers and other individuals who provide care to infants.
CPIC Query Narrative
CPIC is a computerized information storage and retrieval system designed for the sole use of designated law-enforcements agencies. The system consists of one central automated data bank located in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police complex in Ottawa and it is linked through a communications network to remotely-sited computer terminals, mobile workstations, and hand held devices. CPIC is an important investigational tool for law enforcement personnel and CPIC policies and procedures are implemented to safeguard its use.
The CPIC Query/Narrative Online Course is adapted from the Canadian Police Information Centre's traditional classroom training curriculum. In addition to providing information on CPIC policy, this course is designed to provide users with the skills to query CPIC Data Banks, analyze the responses, and send narrative traffic messages using the CPIC System.
Recognition of Emotionally Disturbed Persons
Recognition of Emotionally Disturbed Persons reviews the broad categories of EDPs and provides recommended response strategies and approaches to deal with individuals in crisis. It is designed to build first responders' confidence in dealing with EDPs they encounter in the field.
National Sex Offender Registry
The National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR) represents a vital step for Canadian police organizations in fighting crimes of a sexual nature. The NSOR e-learning course was developed as the training tool for NSOR and the Sex Offender Information Registration Act (SOIRA). Although NSOR is a provincially led initiative, the enforcement of SOIRA is national in application.
Among other topics, the NSOR e-learning course familiarizes learners with:
- History and Key Elements of SOIRA
- Information Collection Procedures
- Disclosure of Information
- Dealing with Non-compliance
- Exemption and Termination Orders
- Serving a Notice to Comply
A National Working Group, comprised of members from the RCMP, Sûreté du Québec, Ontario Sex Offender Registry, Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Department of Justice and the Crowns and Attorney Generals of several provinces, established the training requirements for the development of this course.
Advanced Patrol Training
Designed as a refresher-training course for police officers engaged in general patrol duties, APT covers a variety of topics specific to patrol duty, legal updates, and current patrol issues. Focusing on officer authorities in each of these areas, Advanced Patrol Training is delivered in a two-part blended learning format.
Collision Investigation Level II
Collision Investigation Level II introduces learners to the various stages of a collision and the actions required during the investigation. It teaches how to gather the types of evidence required to investigate, reconstruct and determine the cause of a collision.
This highly interactive course teaches how to properly measure common skid marks and other physical evidence, how to photograph or video a collision scene and the importance of sketching, mapping and diagramming a collision scene. Utilizing animated movies and interactive formula modules, learners can view a vehicle's skid (Straight, Gap, Offset and Yaw) and calculate its speed under various road surfaces.
This course was developed in collaboration with the Atlantic Police Academy. Inspector Don DesRoches, who has investigated more than 1500 collision cases and spent the past 7 years instructing at the Academy, provided the expertise to build this course.
Search and Seizure Warrantless Authorities
Understanding the law pertaining to search and seizure is imperative to conducting a lawful search and / or seizure, maintaining the personal rights of the individual and avoiding the exclusion of seized evidence from trial.
The Search and Seizure Warrantless Authorities course is based upon the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter) and specifically deals with an individual's protection of privacy. The Charter serves as a guarantee against an unreasonable search and / or seizure upon an individual.
It is essential for law enforcement officers to understand several sections of the Charter and various other sources of law to undertake a lawful search and seizure. Among many other topics, the Search and Seizure course also explains Charter violations, classification of evidence and warrant requirements.
